Vrata, The Stunning Valley Of The Triglav Mountain

Let’s Go Surfing

Yesterday afternoon, me and my sister Ana were on our way to the Slovenian part of the Adriatic coast to have a SUPer fun afternoon with our friend Ažbe. We were planing to try out the SUP surf (Stand Up Paddle) on an event organized by an eco-friendly organization “Na Zelenem.si”

But when we got near to Ljubljana, there was a huge 20-kilometers long traffic jam. There were also news on the radio of 3 more heavy traffic situation on our 180 kilometers long journey to the sea side. We decided that the day is far to nice to spend it mostly in the car, trying to reach the coast. So we decided to spend the afternoon in a mountain valley of the Triglav mountain and relax there instead. We took the nearest exit and drove back to the moutains.

It was a really good decission, there was still a lot of people in this valley, but not nearly as much as on the way to the coast and on the coast. And the outside air temperature dropped below 30 degrees, which was truly pleasant after a long fucking hot days we’ve had almost all August long.

The first natural pearl of The Vrata Valley in Triglavski narodni park is the amazing waterfall, Slap Peričnik (eng: Waterfall Peričnik). It’s quite a high waterfall, which consist of the “Upperfall”, which has a 16 meter drop and the “Lower Peričnik fall” which has a stunning 57 meter drop. The Watterfal was created by the geological forces at the Vrata Valley and as the glaciers retreated, the river Triglavska bistrica is being field with the water from the fall. The rock is lime conglomerate, shaped by glaciers and the flowing water over time.

And it’s just an amazing waterfall, kind of natural love on first sight.

We parked the car near the road and walked about 15 minutes up hill to reach the Lower Peričnik waterfall. It’s a truly amazing waterfall. Thousands of liters of water is falling over the amazing rock cliff, speeding up and crashing onto the ground bellow.

The most amazing thing about this waterfall is, that you can get below the waterfall in a small cavern behind it. It’s quite an astonishing feeling standing at that place and the whole rock is leaking water in all the places. So there is no other way than to get wet over here.

I wanted to take a cooling shower under the jet of falling water of “Slap Peričnik” (Eng: The Peričnik Waterfall). But standing 3 meters from the speeding water, it was a bit hurtful to be hit by the re-bounce jet of the water already. Learning that, I aborted the suicide mission and retreated back to dry safety. Quite sure that thing has the power to incapacitate me.

Stunned by the powerful beauty of the falling water, we drove further into the amazing mountain valley of Vrata. As we were driving towards the end of the valley, much to both of our surprise,  we saw our parents car, parked by the side of the road. We knew they were going cycling somewhere, but to meet in the same place, was quite, quite nice.

We’ve met them at Aljažev dom, after having a nice afternoon nap on the soft grass in the area. It’s simply an amazing place to be at. You are completely surrounded by the sharp vertical walls of the mountains around it. This valley was completely shaped by the Triglav Glacier which stretched from here all the way to Ljubljana. It’s kind of hard to imagine, that this deep Valley in the shades of more than 1500 meter-high walls of rocks was once fully filled with moving ice. Stunning fact . . .

Stunning, isn’t it?

If you continue the path further into the valley from Aljažev Dom, you come to the climbers monument. Only our parents went there and they shared this picture. Me and my sister, we just chilled on the last sunlight in the valley, having a nice conversation on soft grass, over some beers and chillaxed completley.

In all . . . not going to the seaside, choosing the cool mortician valley Vrata,
was a marvelous idea for that day.
